Reality TV for Dummies

February 20, 2010 by · 10 Comments

You’ve likely discovered that your favorite TV stations are airing increasingly more documentary-style programs. Termed “reality shows,” these types of programs document real events happening to genuine people who find themselves in a variety of scenarios. There is now a reality show about practically anything, from amateur fashion designers contending for the opportunity to launch their own line to single celebrities looking for love.

MTV’s “The Real World” is one of the original reality series to be shown on TV. The program follows the lives of 7 strangers when “people stop being polite and start being real,” as the series’ tagline indicates. And that’s under no circumstances an exaggeration; each season, the amount of drunken brawls involving meatheads or promiscuous Jacuzzi behavior increases. Boasting almost twenty seasons, the show’s popularity seems only to expand.

How real is reality TV? Although the characters are genuine, the genuineness of events portrayed in reality programs is heavily debated. You can find considerable speculation that a variety of reality shows are at minimum partially scripted, with producers and “story editors” prompting cast members to debate explosive subjects or to make an appearance at the same social gathering as their arch nemesis.

Irrespective of how genuine it truly is, what do we find so captivating about reality Television? Movies and sitcoms frequently have considerably nuttier plotlines and impressive special effects. Yet an increasing number of people are choosing to tune in each and every week to “Joe Millionaire, a series in which an average Joe searches for “the one” in a group of women who presume he is really a billionaire mogul. Perhaps witnessing the everyday drama and trials faced by reality show participants are much easier for us to relate to than, say, snakes on a plane.

Numerous reality shows have swiftly developed a cult following. Many reality programs are released on DVD and Blu-ray, enabling fans to enjoy their favorite episodes whenever they want. In effect, reality show DVDs are a piece of history. They document our culture at its current phase, building a record of what was significant to us at that time, be it merely chronicling the airing of dirty laundry on TV or demonstrating how our peers respond under extraordinary conditions.
